Description: You are asked to design a structure along the Lake Shore Trail just north of the Field Museum. The site is a 64' x 64' concrete pad. You will define a program for this structure. You will enter all of the phases of the design process.
Constraints:
- The program must be viable, appropriate for the site, and buildable.
- The structure must be closable to protect its interior and contents.
- When closed, the structure must remain within the limits of the 64' x 64' pad. When open the structure may extend beyond the limits of the pad, but the structure may not rest on the ground beyond the pad.
- There are no height restrictions for the structure.
- If you would like to have more than one level you may, but keep in mind that space is limited and that you will need to provide either 1.) a ramp and stair, 2.) two ramps, 3.) two sets of stairs plus an elevator, or 4.) a platform lift if the vertical travel distance is short and a combination of two ramps and/or stairs. We will follow codes relating to access and egress, and we will follow the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which establishes rules for access to all people. This link provides information about the act. https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/disability/ada. To see who must comply: https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/docs/hq9805.html. The Act can be found at this link: https://www.ada.gov/regs2010/2010ADAStandards/2010ADAstandards.htm. Relevant sections include: 405 for ramps, 407 for elevators, 410 for platform lifts, and 504 for stairs
- There must be at least two entrances/exits. They should be at opposite sides of the structure.
