Value & Light; Shade & Shadow

Value is the lightness or darkness of a tone or color. The range of values goes from white to black. 

Exercise 1: Crumbled Paper

Crumble a piece of white paper into a shape. Place the paper on a surface. Adjust the light so that there is a single light source. In pencil lightly draw the contours of the crumbled paper. Add gray tones that represent the values of the shade and shadows. Use care to capture the transitions from light to dark. Rotate the position of the crumbled paper and repeat your drawing [?] times.
